On Twitter, people keep sending me the same questions again and again. So, I just tweeted this thread of FAQ which you might find useful.
🇹🇭 Q: When will Thailand re-open the borders for tourists?
A: There are plans to do a limited re-opening in October, but this will be both expensive & inconvenient. You cannot stay where you like and must do quarantine. Entry without restrictions might not happen this year.
🇹🇭 Q: I want to come back to my Thai girlfriend and condo. Can I join the tourist scheme in Phuket?
A: There are no details including dates. It might not even happen. Your girlfriend might be able to visit you after your quarantine, but you might not be able to leave the island.
🇹🇭 Q: People with work permits, spouses of Thai nationals & even students are allowed back in now. When will retirees with visas be allowed back in?
A: I have no idea why people on a retirement visa were never included on the list. Hopefully this mistake will be corrected soon.
🇹🇭 Q: Can we do transit in Thailand?
A: There are commercial planes doing a “technical landing” every day with passengers. However, no-one is allowed off unless they have a certificate of entry. So, this is a new kind of transit. Please check with your airline.
🇹🇭 Q: What happens when the visa amnesty expires on 26 September?
A: They have made it clear that they will not extend again. If you are unable to sort out your visa, you must prepare to leave BEFORE that date. Or get a letter from your embassy or doctor if you really cannot leave.
🇹🇭 Q: Is it possible to change a visa inside the country?
A: There has been a lot of pressure on the government to allow teachers to change to a Non B without leaving the country. Nothing official yet but SOME local Immigration offices are allowing this in SOME circumstances.
🇹🇭 Q: Who can change their visa inside the country?
A: Talking from personal experience, our school has managed to get a Non B for people on visa amnesty who have a teaching license. We nearly have Non B for two on expired tourist visas. But ones on expired student visa and expired Non B without a teaching license cannot change.
🇹🇭 Q: Can I leave Thailand and fly home to get a Non B and then come back?
A: There was a reported case of someone doing this. But he said it took him 8 weeks and cost him 300,000 Baht. Check with the Thai embassy in your home country if they are issuing Non B visas. Not all are.
🇹🇭 Q: When will they allow commercial flights into the airports around Thailand?
A: There has been no date set for this. If your airline has sold you tickets, then they are just guessing. Only people with a certificate of entry from their local Thai embassy are allowed back in.
🇹🇭 Q: When will the land borders re-open?
A: There has been no news about this. But some Immigration officials I have spoken to have speculated that the government might do a limited re-opening of borders around 26 September when the visa amnesty expires. At least to let people out.
