Reposting with permission of the author, who has been reporting on COVID-19 in China since there were only 40 cases in the world.

“I'm gonna be that guy but I don't care. I've been writing about this virus since there were only like 40 cases IN THE WORLD so I'm gonna tell you what you need to know.

COVID-19 has HIV-like traits, and you may not only already have it, but have also already spread it to someone else.

What?

Yes. This point has not been made clear enough in news stories because it sounds hysterical. It's how this virus is different from the flu or cold that make it dangerous.

1. It’s considered a respiratory disease but unlike the flu or the cold, MANY (up to 50% of people depending on the study) that are infected are asymptomatic, and therefore won’t think of getting tested, similar to people with STI’s. It's possible you are infected right now, it's that simple.

2. There’s general scientific consensus that, just like HIV, you are contagious even if you are asymptomatic. This is why it’s spreading so much more than SARS. For SARS and the flu, you have to have symptoms (feel ill) to be contagious. Not with HIV and not with COVID-19.

3. People can relapse. There are some documented cases now of people who were deemed “recovered” only to *very* suddenly deteriorate or even die days later. This is its other key difference from other respiratory viruses. It's possible the virus doesn't actually clear your system.

Now, add in the fact that it has the advantage of spreading through the air (via dropplets) and via surfaces (touch) like a respiratory disease.

What do you make of this info?

1. Understand that it is POSSIBLE you are infected and asymptomatic (but contagious).

It's a scary idea. I've had to accept this for myself a month and a half ago. Most countries in North America and Europe are NOT doing testing en masse, and it’s likely you have been in close proximity with someone who is infected and also doesn't know.

The ideal scenario, just like with STI’s, is everyone gets tested regularly, but medical resources are obviously scarce. If you do think you may have been infected, GO. Get tested. Lie if you have to about risk factors until they test you. I’m not kidding. Testing criteria may have broadened since I last checked, but they were missing tons of cases. Canadian health experts have said as much.

2. Everyone needs to wear a mask (preferably a respirator), NOW.

It’s true, there’s no consensus as to whether respirators reduce your chances of infection (surgical masks definitely don’t), but there is 100% consensus that any mask prevents you from giving it *to others* by intercepting the droplets from your mouth. If everyone wore one, there would be much less transmission, kind of like herd immunity.

Don't hoard them. Leave some for doctors. In fact, if you know people who don't have any, try to give them some. It's for YOUR good for THEM to cover THEIR mouth.

3. Stay. The fuck. At home. (If remotely possible).

Some types of work make this entirely impossible, but many workplaces COULD allow this, but haven’t until now, and simply don’t “like it.”

If it’s the latter, push your company as hard as possible to let you work from home. It's not worth getting infected or infecting others. Again, lie about risk factors or illness if you have to. Remember, it’s possible that you are infected but feel great but will give it to other people. You don’t want that on your conscience.

Yes, staying at home sucks. I’ve been doing it for three months. But slowing the infection is priority #1.
