Frequently Asked Questions
1. What are you doing ?
The process to join the Fedora group is a bit different. First join
@fedora and tell us about your experience with Linux or free and open source in general. A few lines would do. This is to prove you are legit.
Then an admin will verify your message and add you to the real, Fedora group.
2. Why are you doing it ?
1. With 2.5K + members, there were inactive members, silent spammers and so on.
2. With a public group, anyone can read your messages and harvest the members list.
3. A lot of our users were stuck under spammers personal messaging them.
In short, we needed a solution that protects our members' privacy and safety.
3. Why don't you use <insert_bot_name> bot ?
1. We can't take a risk by allowing a random bot in the group.
2. Even if we have a bot, it doesn't prevent spammers from stealing the group data or pinging members in personal message.
4. What will happen to the old group, that is Fedora | Legacy ?
The old group is archived and is set to read only. So no one can message in it, except admins.
5. But doing so doesn't prevent spammers from stealing the members list or whatever !
Yes. So we are asking you to exit the legacy group as it is of no use, except act as source of various messages. Don't forget that you can still read the group without being a member.
6. How can you migrate all the 2.5K members ?
Our idea is not to migrate all the 2.5K members. We want only legit users who care about Linux or free and open source.
7. Anything else for me to know ?
On joining
@fedora0. Describe your FOSS or Linux experience
1. Change your privacy settings so we can add you
2. Having a username helps
3. Delete your messages once you have been added, and leave the group
We have 5 minutes slow mode. So type all your content in one message.
For any doubt, please message an admin.
