Guide on how to convey notices of termination and repatriation plans sensitively to your workers
         From time to time, you may initiate to terminate your worker’s employment in Singapore and repatriate him back to his home country.
2.      It is important that you convey such decisions sensitively. This is particularly important if the worker is unprepared to receive the news. Such news, if conveyed negatively, can cause distress to the workers especially if he faces other pressures such as debts or family pressures. In the extreme case, it can lead to self-harm.
3.      This advisory provides guidelines on how to convey notices of termination and repatriation plans to your worker sensitively.
     a)    Arrange a face-to-face meeting with your worker to convey the news.
     b)    Explain clearly the reasons for his termination.
     c)    Respect and show empathy to your worker’s reaction to the news with tact and dignity.
     d)    Be firm and fair to your worker.
     e)    Allow your worker to express his own thoughts about the termination and give him the opportunity to feedback about the company, his co-workers and his job to achieve closure.
     f)    Discuss any outstanding salary and compensation matters with your worker and give assurance you will follow up. Offer help and assistance in form of severance pay, if necessary. Provide clear timelines to set expectations right.
     g)    Prepare a negotiable repatriation plans by discussing the flight, Pre-Departure Test (PDT) and time frame that are mutually beneficial to you and your worker.
     h)    Give assurance to your worker that you will send him home to the international port of entry within his home country safely and timely.
     i)    Give assurance to your worker that you will continue to look after his well-being (both mental and physical) and to provide the necessary support on upkeep and maintenance until his flight date.
     j)    Check on your worker’s emotion regularly and provide your worker options to call for help, if necessary. The Mental Health Hotlines are Migrant Workers’ Centre at 6536 2692 or HealthServe at 3157 4460.
