China is (sadly) becoming less international. 🇨🇳😭👇 The number of foreigners working in mainland declined sharply in the past decade.
In Shanghai, the number of expatriates fell more than 20% in the past decade from more than 208,000 to around 163,000. In Beijing, it has fallen by more than 40% since 2010, to about 63,000.
❗️ According to the latest 2020 census, there were 845,600 foreigners residing permanently in the mainland China.
The census saw a registration of 371,380 residents from Hong Kong, 55,732 residents from Macao, 157,886 residents from Taiwan, and 845,697 foreigners residing in 31 provinces on mianland China, totalling 1,430,695 people.
🌱 By residence in the mainland China, the top 10 cities / provinces were:
Guangdong - 418,509
Yunnan - 379, 281
Shanghai - 163,954
Fujian - 106,248
Beijing - 62,812
Jiangsu - 58,201
Zhejiang - 46,189
Guangxi - 26,043
Shandong - 21,829 and
Liaoning - 20,562 persons.
Today many old-timers in the country are also considering leaving. 🙈 American Chamber of Commerce says their members struggle to attract new foreign talents to move to the mainland.
More than one reason behind it — but China’s zero-tolerance approach to Covid-19 and the upcoming changes to China’s tax laws are big drivers.
“According to an AmCham survey, 36% of companies with annual revenues of more than US$100 million said they would consider moving all or part of their facilities out of China if the new tax policy was implemented.”
🤩 Many of the foreign ‘China watchers’ and business executives now working in/with China, who are also the strongest advocates for the China-World relationship, were Chinese language and/or exchange students in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.
I myself was one of them. I moved to Chongqing in 2006 to study business and economics. ✌️ My first year was dedicated to the Chinese language study — and then together with local kids I did my linear algebra, e-commerce and statistics studies for 3 years in Mandarin.
This was a profound experience that enabled me to better understand the country, its people and build a career connecting China and the world. 🙌
Today, sadly, student exchanges are down, too.
While the US has issued more than 85,000 visas to Chinese students in the past few months, China has granted only a handful. I hope this will change in 2022 post Olympics and/or National Congress.
“Even as government-to-government relations continue to decline, it is often said that the people of our two nations have no quarrel with each other. With so many foreigners leaving China, examples of good people-to-people relations will become harder to find.” — said the head of AmCham in his latest SCMP piece.
I’ll second that. Today we need more people-to-people relationships with China and ‘the West’ — not less.
Both sides need to acknowledge that we are better together. 💪 And may the world open up again soon.
