Книга Феликса Гваттари - Molecular Revolution: Psychiatry and Politics

The essays translated in this volume include principally articles that would be considered political (in a wide sense of this term) rarher than philosophical, but in the tradition of Guattari and Deleuze there can be no comparlmentalization of disciplines: philosophy, politics, structuralist linguistics, psychoanalysis (or rarher its undoing), micro-sociology - all frontiers are violated but violated on principle.

Who was Karl Marx?

Marx biographer Sven-Eric Liedman asks this very question in his new book. Here he reviews the various biographies that exist – books that in one way or another claim to deal with the complete Marx, his life and his works.

Andrew Hartman - Marx at 200: Just Getting Started

In our fully globalized world, Marx’s ideas still conform to a deeply felt sense about what capital does to our labor.

'Who was Karl Marx?'

2018 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of German philosopher and Communist icon Karl Marx. Is Karl Marx still relevant in the 21st century?
Philosopher, historian and economist Karl Marx is a name that’s back on everyone's lips. The documentary explores the ongoing impact of his writings in Europe and China. How should we approach the legacy of someone who - like few others before or since - not only changed the world, but divided it as well? Even though not everyone accepts his ideas, Marx's analyses and theories motivated many people to take political action. We meet activists, witnesses and experts - individuals who are able to illuminate Karl Marx's impact from the Russian revolution until today. Even in the 21st century, two hundred years after his birth, Marx has lost none of his relevance. After the fall of the Iron Curtain in Europe and the end of the Cold War in 1989 and 1990, the sun seemed to be setting on Marx. But during the financial crisis of 2007-2008, when the contradictions of capitalism were once more laid bare, Marx was resurrected as an icon. His theories and ideas are now enjoying something of a renaissance at universities, churches, and conferences, and in mainstream broadcast and print media. The Chinese have even donated a larger-than-life statue of Marx to the city of his birth, Trier. This thought-provoking documentary does not shy away from controversy. As well providing insight into Karl Marx’s life and work, it investigates what appealed to past and present advocates of his philosophies, bringing the story to life with a rich trove of archive material.

The Cambridge Companion to Marx

Marx was a highly original and polymathic thinker, unhampered by disciplinary boundaries, whose intellectual influence has been enormous. Yet in the wake of the collapse of Marxism-Leninism in Eastern Europe the question arises as to how important his work really is for us now. An important dimension of this volume is to place Marx's writings in their historical context and to separate what he actually said from what others (in particular, Engels) interpreted him as saying. Informed by current debates and new perspectives, the volume provides a comprehensive coverage of all the major areas to which Marx made significant contributions.

David Broder - Macron’s Anniversary

It's been a year since Emmanuel Macron was elected. His “start-up presidency” is a liberal dystopia.

A former freight depot and now a residential “start-up campus,” Paris’s Station F is exactly the kind of project with which Emmanuel Macron wants to associate his presidency. Hip, modern, and housed in a building where “old-fashioned” workers used to labor, it gels with his vision of France as “une start-up nation.” His remarks on “France 2.0” are peppered with terms inspired by Silicon Valley, spoken in English for added effect.

Why Marx Now?

McKenzie Wark considers the question "Why Marx now?" through a close reading of one of the Communist Manifesto's most famous lines.

So when asked: ‘Why Marx now?’ I don’t think the answer lies in a return to a philosophy or method or dogma that was current in the small world of even the more cosmopolitan radical thinkers of the middle of the nineteenth century. “All that is solid melts into air, all that is sacred is profaned,” and surely that includes even the verities of classical Marxism itself.

Alberto Toscano - Solidarity and Political Work

On a most general level
and after 150 years since the first volume of Capital was first published: Why should one still read Marx today?
Marx’s writing remains the most formidable effort to weld the drive to understand our world to the practical imperative of its negation. In other words, it is the project, both vital and paradoxical, of creating a partisan and revolutionary science.

Stathis Kouvelakis - Borderland. Greece and the EU’s Southern Question

Reflecting on the art of war, the real motor of politics as defined in The Prince, Machiavelli noted that a landscape looks different when seen from the mountain, as opposed to the plain. The same goes for relations between territorial political and economic configurations: the vantage point one adopts can offer a new perspective. That of one national formation in particular, Greece, may offer advantages for trying to grasp some of the larger tendencies bearing on the world we live in. Greece is certainly a small country; but, in virtue of its geopolitical, cultural and economic position, it is an outpost of Europe and thus also its border. To see it in this way is to understand it as a permanent point of delimitation and contact between ‘Europe’ but also, and the distinction is significant, the European Union and its outside: the Other against which Europe defines and constructs itself.

Сборник - Urban Uprisings. Challenging Neoliberal Urbanism in Europe

During the last decade, European cities have been shaken by a wave of urban collective action. In this book, we argue that this wave needs to be understood in connection with the structural context of neoliberal urbanism, and that it can be analysed using the concept of ‘urban social movement’. Th is means that we go against conventional approaches to some of these collective acts, which researchers and media have labelled “riots”.

Alphan Telek - Political precariat

The concept of the precariat has explanatory power day-to-day and transformative potential in the socio-political world. For a just and honorable life, we need the political precariat.
The groundbreaking concept ‘precariat’, coined by British economist Guy Standing, reflects the emergence of a new social class by identifying a 40-year long precaritisation process under neoliberal capitalism, due to changing relations of production and distribution. However, the concept has come under some concerted criticism from social scientists.

L.A. Kauffman - The Theology of Consensus

Consensus decision-making has dominated social movements for forty years. Let's try something different.
Consensus decision-making, a process in which groups come to agreement without voting, has been a central feature of direct action movements for nearly forty years, from the anti-nuclear movement of the 1970s to the turn-of-the-millennium global justice movement to 2011’s Occupy Wall Street.

René Zavaleta Mercado - Problems of Dependent Determination and Primordial Form (1982)

René Zavaleta Mercado lived politics. He lived the Bolivian nationalist revolution of 1952, the coup that ended it twelve years later, the revolutionary Popular Assembly in La Paz in 1971, and the brief Allende electoral experiment in Chile. He endured imprisonment, flight, and expatriation during Latin America’s dark 1970s. He was a revolutionary, diplomat,  politician, educator, and  exile. And through it all, he never stopped writing. If Zavaleta’s written work proves difficult, this is in part because he was an interpreter of the conjuncture – of these many conjunctures – the details of which may be distant to some readers today.

Omar G. Encarnación - The Rise and Fall of the Latin American Left

Conservatives now control Latin America’s leading economies, but the region’s leftists can still look to Uruguay for direction.
Last December’s election of Sebastián Piñera, of the National Renewal party, to the Chilean presidency was doubly significant for Latin American politics. Coming on the heels of the rise of right-wing governments in Argentina in 2015 and Brazil in 2016, Piñera’s victory signaled an unmistakable right-wing turn for the region. For the first time since the 1980s, when much of South America was governed by military dictatorship, the continent’s three leading economies are in the hands of right-wing leaders.

О предстоящих выборах в Венесуэле

The people of Venezuela go to vote

The Venezuelan people will go to the polling stations across the country on Sunday, May 20th. This is the fifth presidential election since Hugo Chavez won the vote in 1998. It is the second since the death of Chavez in 2013.
The Bolivarian Revolution, which is the name given to the process inaugurated in the first term of Chavez’s presidency, faces a decisive test.
