Thomas Piketty’s thousand-page economics bestseller reduces capital to mere wealth leaving out its political impact on social and economic relationships throughout history.

Thomas Piketty’s global renown shouldn’t stop us from asking some hard political questions or rather questions about his intellectual and political deception. The media have been almost unanimous about his Capital in the Twenty-First Century, proof in itself of the book’s total innocuousness. The world would have to have changed a great deal for Libération, Le Monde, the New York Times, the Washington Post and many more to be so enthusiastic about anything actually controversial. One thing is for sure: only favourably disposed media could hail Piketty as a “21st-century Marx” simply because he calls his book Capital. He admits he has “never managed really” to read Das Kapital or any other works of Marx, does not set out any theory of capitalism, and makes no attempt to challenge its basis.

Советский Союз времен Леонида Ильича Брежнева вряд ли можно было назвать идеальным местом для развития свободных дискуссий и формирования новаторских идей. И уж в последнюю очередь - идей марксистских. Строго говоря, 1970-е годы были временем, когда интеллигенция окончательно отвернулась от марксизма. Во всяком случае - та ее часть, которая задавала тон в неформальном идеологическом общении, не прекращавшемся ни на день с начала хрущевской оттепели. И вот парадокс: несмотря на преследования диссидентов, несмотря на ужесточение цензуры, явственно наступившее в 1972-1974 годах, несмотря на то что сама власть откровенно демонстрировала свою неприязнь ко всему новому, общество отнюдь не было чуждо духу свободной дискуссии. Проблема была в другом: насколько эти дискуссии были плодотворны, насколько они могли породить новые или просто адекватные, оригинальные идеи.

Marco A. Gandásegui, Jr - Boldness in the Marxist thinking of Samir Amín

Samir Amin identified himself as a Marxist. What does it mean to be a Marxist, given that Karl Marx wrote his great works 150 years ago? According to Samir, “to be a Marxist is to start from two great contributions elaborated by Marx. In the first place, the critique of reality. But the reality situated in one’s era.” That is to say, in the present. We cannot critique something that has already passed, or that exists in an unknown future. He points out, in addition, that “although capitalism is not what it was, the critique of capitalism is still fundamental.” In the second place, “the critique of the ideological image of capitalism. That is to say, of economic theory and of economism.” The ideology of capitalists has created a false knowledge of reality: the economism that proclaims “the end of history” and the unending existence of social relations of (waged) slavery.

Вальтер Беньямин, по праву считающийся отцом-основателем современных теорий массовых медиа, еще в конце 1920-х годов, во время своей поездки в Москву, знакомится с работами Сергея Третьякова и круга журнала «ЛЕФ», киноработами Вертова, Пудовкина и Эйзенштейна. В 1930-х благодаря Брехту он глубже изучает концепцию оперирующего писателя Третьякова и использует ее вместе с брехтовской теорией радио и эпического театра для создания своей оригинальной медиатеории. Однако Беньямин существенно переосмыслил марксистскую идею изменения средств художественного производства, производственного аппарата и писательской техники в ходе социалистической революции. Она предполагала у него не простое выражение художником своих левых взглядов и преобразования продуктов художественного труда, но в первую очередь изменение доступных ему средств производства «в пролетарском духе», возможное даже в условиях капиталистического общества. Беньямин в этой связи писал о необходимости использования художником новых медийных возможностей фотографии, кино, радио и массовой журналистики в той мере, в которой они задействуют техники обратной связи, прерывания действия (цезуры), монтажа, остранения (V-эффекта Брехта), позволяющих избежать превращения революционных содержаний в иллюзионистские формы развлечения и эстетизации наличных социальных отношений.

Corporate capture in Europe - When big business dominates policy-making and threatens our right

This report examines the extreme and undue influence of big business on European Union (EU) and member state decision-making processes. It has been produced by the Alliance for Lobbying Transparency and Ethics Regulation (ALTER-EU) as a response to the distortions we witness in policy and law making at EU-level and across a member states.
It shows how corporate capture has been behind the lack of action in the aftermath of the financial crisis, with banking regulation that continues to allow mega-mergers of banks, failing to tackle the “too big to fail” problem. Similarly, the arms industry has influenced the agenda and objectives of the EU’s defence programs.

Asad Haider - Socialists Think

Sometimes it is, “Marxists believe that…” Sometimes, “Socialists understand that…” Whatever the wording, the point is the same.  Different propositions follow. They may be general theoretical claims, having to do with the relation between “race and class” or “reform and revolution.” Or they may have an immediate, pressing character, providing a position on a current policy question or strategic debate.

Jackson Lears on revisiting 1960s counterculture, and nine books that try to recapture the politics and sensibility of the time.

Revisiting this story is important and necessary. But difficulties arise when one tries to identify who those demons actually were. The conventional accounts of radical protest all feature the usual suspects: Tom Hayden, Mark Rudd, Abbie Hoffman, the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), the Black Panthers, the Maoists, the Yippies, the devotees of Che. According to this narrative, nearly all the white protesters are privileged draft dodgers from a northern tier of universities that stretched from Cambridge and New York through Ann Arbor and Madison to Berkeley. As hopes for electing an antiwar president fade, they descend into pseudo-Marxist posturing and self-destructive fantasies of violent revolution.
