Согласно автору статьи, мы сегодня стоим накануне эпохальной перемены: превращения наемного работника в самопредпринимателя (self-employer) (согласно формуле А. Горца), перехода от расщепленного труда к расщепленной занятости. В статье анализируются два аспекта этого антропологического изменения: а) дезориентация во времени (потеря темпорального горизонта человеческого существования) и б) «колонизация» нерабочего времени (инвестирование всех типов времени в «производство самости»). К этим аспектам возможны два подхода: 1) отсылающий к М. Фуко: контроль времени определяется уже не дисциплинарными практиками, а технологиями неолиберальных правительств, ставящих своей целью подчинение всех социальных форм скорее менеджерскому этосу, чем триумфу рынка; 2) вдохновленный Хартмутом Розой: восприятие времени экзистенции имеет тенденцию подчиняться глобальному процессу социального ускорения, в котором проект модерна оборачивается против самого себя.

It is the sixtieth anniversary of Raya Dunayevskaya’s Marxism and Freedom, a work both of its time and ahead of its time. First published in 1958, at the height of the Cold War but not long after the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, it was one of a number of writings in the period that put forth a democratic, humanist, and revolutionary Marxism, both against the Russian Stalinist system and against the “liberal democratic” capitalism of the United States and Western Europe. This was the same period when E. P. Thompson broke away from the British Communist Party over Hungary, and when Edgar Morin and others formed the Arguments Group in France, both of them reacting against the brutal Russian intervention in Hungary.

Modern narratives of capitalist development often emphasize the positive-sum outcomes of many individual choices. They suggest that free, even selfish, decisions go hand in hand with growth and innovation. They often assume that vast wealth accumulated by a few accompanies improved circumstances for many. The history of slavery’s capitalism warns against all these expectations. My new book, Accounting for Slavery, as well as work by historians such as Daina Ramey Berry and Calvin Schermerhorn, shows that slavery in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was highly adaptable to the pursuit of profit.

Memoir, criticism, homily, fiction poured from his pen, a fountain pen that reminded one that Edward was very much an intellectual in the nineteenth- century tradition of a Zola or of a Victor Hugo, who once remarked that genius is a promontory in the infinite. I read that line as a schoolboy, wrote it in my notebook and though I laugh now a little at the pretension of the line, I do think of Edward as a promontory, a physical bulk on the intellectual and political landscape that forced people, however disinclined they may have been, to confront the Palestinian experience.

Ten years since financial markets crashed in the United States (U.S.), the world economy is anything but near so-called “recovery.” Far from it: global economic growth is still slower since the crisis. Investment, which includes flows of capital for new production and for buying up other companies, declined for 2017. Global unemployment is estimated at 192 million for 2018. “Global value chains”, production networks controlled by transnational corporations (TNCs) which benefit from lower labour costs, are said to be slowly declining. Economies in the global South are threatened with the possibility of debt crises that could unravel in the next years.
