One moment in a BBC interview with Jeremy Corbyn in summer 2017 crystallized the dilemmas facing Europe’s left parties on questions of migration.
Would a future government under his premiership, the Labour leader was asked, accept European Union “free movement”? In response, Corbyn stressed that the rights of “EU nationals” must be guaranteed and the needs of British-based companies for European skilled workers would be assessed. When pressed, he clarified: his preferred system would be approximate to the present free-movement regime, but it would outlaw “the wholesale importation of underpaid workers from central Europe.” The ability of agencies to import low-paid workers to Britain to undercut or dismiss, for example, “an existing workforce in the construction industry” would be ended. To buttress this, jobs should also be advertised “in the locality first.”

For Richard Pipes, the anticommunist ideologue and historian, Soviet tyranny was rooted not in communism, but in the Russian soul.
His anticommunist books represented his most banal work. More provocative was how Pipes’s understanding of Russia’s historical development colored his analysis of the Soviet Union and the Cold War. For Pipes, the problem of the Soviet Union lay not simply in 1917, Lenin, Stalin, or even Marxism-Leninism. As he wrote in Survival is Not Enough, “the decisive factors [for Soviet authoritarianism] are not the ideas but the soil on which they happen to fall.”

Рукопись, названная "33 тезиса", была найдена в архиве Макса Хоркхаймера без названия и с рукописной пометкой «Г. Маркузе. Февр. 1947»  в правом верхнем углу. В центре страницы написано «Teil I»(Часть 1). Рукопись содержит 33 тезиса, посвященные современной ситуации в мире, которые предназначались для возможного возобновления журнала Института Zeitshrift fur Sozialforschung. Хотя в письме к Хоркхаймеру от 17 октября 1947 г. указывалось, что Маркузе работает над тезисами, эта рукопись не была найдена. Таким образом, мы публикуем черновик февраля 1947 года.

За последние годы книжный рынок России оказался заваленным переводами текстов Айн Рэнд. Книг за ее авторством сейчас так много, что создается ощущение настоящего культа певца капитализма в России. Подобное отношение к Рэнд было характерно для западного читателя на протяжении ХХ века. Теперь ее, если и не читают, то уж точно издают и переводят пачками. То ли их никто не читает, то их очень сильно любят, но почему-то никто не говорит, что книги эти омерзительны. Американский политический теоретик Кори Робин не постеснялся написать прекрасный текст об Айн Рэнд, указав на место «мыслительницы» в истории политической философии и в истории мысли вообще. Он блестяще иронизирует по поводу дутой популярности этого автора и ее значения в популярной культуре. Так что этот текст может стать прекрасным противоядием против засилья той части либертарианской политической философии, что зовется «объективизмом».
