Philip Mirowski - Machine Dreams: economics becomes a cyborg science

This is the first cross-over book in the history of science written by an historian of economics, combining a number of disciplinary and stylistic orientations. In it Philip Mirowshki shows how what is conventionally thought to be "history of technology" can be integrated with the history of economic ideas. His analysis combines Cold War history with the history of the postwar economics profession in America and later elsewhere, revealing that the Pax Americana had much to do with the content of such abstruse and formal doctrines such as linear programming and game theory. He links the literature on "cyborg science" found in science studies to economics, an element missing in the literature to date. Mirowski further calls into question the idea that economics has been immune to postmodern currents found in the larger culture, arguing that neoclassical economics has surreptitiously participated in the desconstruction of the integral "Self." Finally, he argues for a different style of economics, an alliance of computational and institutional themes, and challenges the widespread impression that there is nothing else besides American neoclassical economic theory left standing after the demise of Marxism.

Multinational corporations are luring millennial workers with empty promises and self-serving slogans.

I still have the red lanyard I wore at the “Business Fights Poverty” conference at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School last summer. The badge asked me to write my name on the front, and, on the back, state the “purpose that drives me” and the “people I need.” The idea, a conference organizer later explained, was that together, the guests a mix of businesspeople, development workers, and NGO staffers would “unlock opportunities for social impact.” With its Davos-style platitudes and its TED-inspired evangelism, the conference exemplified the corporate credo that economic inequality can and should be solved by innovative market solutions and compassionate millionaires. Here, inequality is not the outcome of power imbalances, with traceable roots and political structures, but an ahistorical “challenge” just waiting for thought leaders to fix it.

Speaking recently to an audience in Tel Aviv via satellite from Moscow soon after the murder of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden alleged that Saudi Arabia had used Israeli-made spyware to track Khashoggi’s movements before his death. Snowden said that the Israeli cyber-intelligence company NSO Group Technologies had developed software known as Pegasus that was sold to the Saudis and allowed Khashoggi to be monitored by infecting the smartphone of one of his contacts, another Saudi critic, based in Canada.

This dissident, Omar Abdulaziz, filed a lawsuit in Israel in late 2018 alleging that the NSO Group had broken international law by selling its technology to oppressive regimes. “NSO should be held accountable in order to protect the lives of political dissidents, journalists, and human rights activists,” said his Jerusalem-based lawyer, Alaa Mahajna. The NSO Group is reportedly owned by an American company, Francisco Partners, and both Goldman Sachs and Blackstone are invested in it. The Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, a longtime supporter of the Saudis, has confirmed Snowden’s allegations about the Israeli company’s dealings with the Kingdom.

В статье анализируется понятие классовой идентичности в контексте современных социальных и политических трансформаций, следствием которых, в частности, стал стремительный рост поддержки правого популизма среди европейских и американских наемных работников. Автор строит рассуждение вокруг работы Дидье Эрибона «Возвращение в Реймс», которая рассматривается в контексте других релевантных для проблематики работ. Автобиографическое исследование, ставшее предметом публичных дебатов в Европе в последние годы, позволяет рассмотреть во взаимосвязи ключевые для стратегии левых сил проблемы: роль социальных структур в формировании субъекта, консервативный поворот в официальном левом дискурсе и его влияние на классовую идентичность. Кроме того, в статье поднимается вопрос об актуальности концептов класса и классовой борьбы, рассматриваются имманентные этим категориям теоретические и практические проблемы. Как показывают П. Андерсон, Э. Балибар, Г. М. Тамаш, при сохранении существующего способа производства от класса как структурной категории невозможно абстрагироваться полностью.
В статье показано, что «класс» продолжит существовать и функционировать, если о нем даже перестанут говорить. Однако в силу опосредования культурой или дискурсом социальные и политические измерения этой категории оказываются подвижными. Автор демонстрирует, почему именно понятие класса является отправной точкой в актуальных дебатах о левой политике и возвращении един- ства социальной теории и политического действия.

Ха! — скажете вы. При текущей конъюнктуре эти предприятия будут приносить деньги в чьих угодно руках. Это просто куры, несущие золотые яйца.

Фокус в том, что предприятия, которые впечатлили Александра Лукашенко в Орше, при нынешней конъюнктуре в любых руках будут работать на грани рентабельности. Просто частник не стал бы это терпеть.

В этом секрет пресловутой «эффективности» частника от всего, что не может приносить прибыль не ниже средней по рынку, он просто избавится. Его основная цель — стремление к прибыли. А вот насыщение рынка товарами и создание рабочих мест — побочные эффекты, которые могут быть, а могут и не быть. Закроет завод и вложит всё в какие-нибудь биткоины. Имеет право.

Было несколько масштабных программ приватизации таких вот предприятий и все они заканчивались почти что ничем. Просили недорого. Но никто не захотел взять на себя подвиг спасения какого-нибудь захудалого завода и тянуть это счастье на себе. А государство не хотело отдавать предприятия под их последующее закрытие или сокращение персонала. Так все и остались при своём.

In the Prison Notebooks he insists on the need for «a cultural front alongside the merely economic and merely political ones». We should note, however, that the concept of culture we find in the notebooks is rather different from that of mainstream anthropology. At the same time Gramsci’s approach to culture and the relation of culture to history can be seen as informed by an ethnographic sensibility, which is always determined to seek out, and take seriously, the narratives others use to make sense of their world and navigate their way through it.

Рассматриваемая работа посвящена в большей степени именно третьему аспекту. Вместе с этим через призму теоретической реконструкции «новых прочтений» Маркса Питтс затрагивает проблемы эмпирических исследований труда, а также политических возможностей левого движения.

С. Мареева - Социальные неравенства и социальная структура современной России в восприятии населения

В статье на материалах общероссийского репрезентативного социологического исследования, проведённого Институтом социологии ФНИСЦ РАН в 2018 г., дан анализ представлений россиян о социальной структуре современного российского общества и характеризующих его неравенствах. Показано, что проблема неравенств сегодня очень остро воспринимается населением, и за годы последнего кризиса не только не отошла на второй план, но даже стала восприниматься острее. Продемонстрировано, что потенциал использования неравенств как стимула продуктивности постепенно сокращается, поскольку за последние пять лет произошло снижение толерантности россиян как к тем основаниям неравенств, которые ранее представлялись им скорее легитимными, так и к различным проявлениям немонетарных неравенств, основанных на неравенстве доходов. В сложившихся институциональных условиях существующие неравенства в целом расцениваются населением как несправедливые. О высоком дисбалансе между реальностью и ожиданиями населения говорит и наблюдаемый разрыв между «идеальной» и «реальной» моделями социальной структуры современного российского общества в оценках россиян.

Samir Amin - «Modern Imperialism, Monopoly Finance Capital, and Marx’s Law of Value»

Last August, the world lost a great Marxist theorist, Samir Amin. Amin was politically engaged throughout his life, worked in planning agencies in Mali and Senegal, and contributed to the theoretical elaboration of Marxist theory. Amin published dozens of books that cover a wide range of topics, including, amongst other topics: Marx’s theory of value, imperialism, the history of the global South, and Maoism. Although his writings are very accessible, one might find it difficult to begin a study of his writings. Monthly Review has recently published the definitive one-volume anthology of Amin’s writings Modern Imperialism, Modern Finance Capital, and Marx’s Law of Value.

Slavoj Zizek - Why secondary contradictions matter: a maoist view

Already a quick glance at our imbroglio makes it clear that we are caught up in multiple social struggles: the tension between the liberal establishment and new populism, the ecological struggle, struggles for feminism and sexual liberation, ethnic and religious struggles, the struggle for universal human rights, struggles against the digital control over our lives… How to bring all these together without simply privileging one of them (be it economic, feminist, or anti-racist…) as the “true” struggle that provides the key to all other struggles? Half a century ago, when the Maoist wave was at its strongest, Mao Zedong’s distinction between “principal” and “secondary” contradictions (from his treatise “On Contradiction” written in 1937) was common currency in political debates. Perhaps, this distinction deserves to be brought back to life in the context of our question.

«Вряд ли работа Лауэсена представляла интерес, если бы речь шла просто о книге бывшего заключенного, стоящего на достаточно маргинальных позициях даже по меркам левого радикализма. Принято считать, что теория зависимости, исходившая из того, что слаборазвитость периферии воспроизводится характером ее интеграции в мировую капиталистическую систему, утратила академическую респектабельность, а тьермондизм исчез как значимая политическая позиция. Во многом это действительно так, если мы сравниваем интеллектуальный и политический контекст 1970-х с «концом истории» 1990-х годов, и критикой неолиберализма с альтерглобалистских позиций с конца 1990-х — начала 2000-х. В то же время ситуация стала резко меняться в последние годы, и сегодня вслед за возвращением теорий империализма на фоне «войны с терроризмом» начала 2000-х мы можем говорить о полномасштабном возрождении теорий капитализма, сконцентрированных на феномене эксплуатации периферии».

Together with a large fraction of mainstream media, and a certain kind of “intellectual class,” Charlie Hebdo has shifted public attention to new social questions, with free speech, laïcité [state secularism], and French national identity at the forefront. Totally absorbed by the increasing visibility of Muslims in France, and by supposedly connected questions of personal liberties, traditional economic questions concerning class were increasingly sidelined.

Jeanne Morefield - Trump’s Foreign Policy Isn’t the Problem

It reflects, like a funhouse mirror, a twisted image of U.S. imperialism.

After two years of President Donald Trump, critics and commentators are still struggling to make sense of his foreign policy. Despite some hopes that he might mature into the role of commander in chief, he has continued to thumb his nose at most mainstream academic frameworks for analyzing and conducting foreign policy. Indeed, what makes Trump’s interactions with the rest of the world so confusing is the way he flirts with, and then departs from, the script. He may issue policies and give speeches that include words such as “sovereignty,” “principled realism,” and “peace through strength,” but they frequently appear cheek by jowl with racist rants, crass opportunism, nationalist tirades, and unrestrained militarism.
